Horns – Thursday September 14

Mass Appeal – Horns
Old Market Square
Thursday September 14
Rehearsal: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Concert: 7:30 – 8:00 pm

Horns at The Cube

We had such fun playing last year that we’re going to do it again – same time, same place! We have a new crop of tunes to learn and between now and the concert we’ll be adding a song or two, so be sure to check the site regularly.  We’ll also be adding in notes from our Music Director on each of the charts to give you an idea of how each will be played in concert. And if all else fails, we’ll just work it out at rehearsal!

Leading the fun is Todd Martin.  When he’s not working as an in-demand touring and session musician, or making a guest appearance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (on harmonica, french horn, or vocals), Todd can be found bringing the New Orleans second line tradition to Winnipeg with his group The Dirty Catfish Brass Band (www.dirtycatfishbrassband.com). Todd will be leading a rehearsal between 6:00 and 7:00 pm, followed by a concert running from 7:30 – 8:00 pm at the Cube stage in Old Market Square, in the heart of the Exchange District. Each piece Todd has selected has a number of different charts, so read on to find out how you can be a part of it!

Here’s what we’ll be playing.  Read on to find the music and sample tracks, with notes notes on each song from Conductor Todd!  if you play somethign other than a horn, come on down anyway – you’ll find a chart that fits you in the selections below and we’d love to have you!

  • Parts in B flat- Trumpets, Tenor Saxophones, Soprano Saxophones, Clarinet
  • Parts in E Flat- Alto Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone

Todd Says: L’il Liza Jane, Little Liza Jane, or Liza Jane is a standard dating back to at least 1910. It is performed both as a song and an instrumental in many forms and styles of music, including the New Orleans Brass Band tradition. I’ll be looking for an improvised solo on this one so start thinking about what to play over the form of the song!!:))) Also feel free to embellish the melody on the second time through.

Grazin’ In The Grass

Todd Says: Grazin’ in the Grass is a great tune written by Philemon Hou, and first recorder by Hugh Masekela, the great South African trumpeter and Jazz musician. It starts with all instruments playing the bass line. We are also going to play some solos on this one too!!!!!

Shake It Off

Todd’s sheet music download: Shake It Off (Piano)
Todd’s sheet music download: Shake It Off (Mellophone in F)

Todd Says: Shake It Off is the mega hit by Taylor Swift. This arrangement is the one my band, Dirty Catfish Brass Band has created and recorded. We’ve changed the feel from straight ahead pop, to a latin feel, with alot of syncopation driving the tune. You’ll either need to double tongue or doodle tongue the eight notes in the trombone and sax parts. You can also play 2 quarters instead of the 4 eighths to simply. Keep the melody in the trumpets and upper woodwinds nice and light. Most of all, Have Fun!

Ode To Joy

Todd’s sheet music download: Ode to Joy – Trumpet 1 in Bb
Todd’s sheet music download: Ode to Joy – Trumpet 2 in Bb
Todd’s sheet music download: Ode to Joy – Trombone
Todd’s sheet music download: Ode to Joy – Horn in F
Todd’s sheet music download: Ode to Joy – Tuba
Todd’s sheet music download: Ode to Joy – All Horns

Todd Says: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony is an anthem of brotherhood, and togetherness. It is one of the great masterpieces in the symphonic repertoire, by which many composers have measured themselves and their work against. In this arrangement, make sure to count your rests while the Tubas play the opening solo. I’ll be there to cue you if you get lost:)
